MB 119 Medical Terminology (3)

This course is a student-directed approach in the development and comprehension of medical terms as they relate to the body systems. emphasis is placed on the understanding of word roots, prefixes and suffixes of terms as well as the defining of diagnostic, surgical and procedure terms for the medical field. Medical records and abbreviations are introduced.

MB 213 Medical Office Systems & Procedures (3)

This course covers the responsibilities of the assistant/secretary with procedures performed in a contemporary medical setting including preparation of insurance forms, computerized medical billing and collection, formatting of medical reports, minutes of medical meetings, and travel arrangements for the physician. A simulated office production unit will be included. Medical assisting aspects are also discussed and students will receive actual experience in front desk techniques.

(Fall Semester) Prerequisites: MB 119 and CS 132.


MB 221 Medical Transcription I (3)

This introductory course gives the student the opportunity to acquire skills in the growing field of medical transcription. Various medical documents such as histories, physicals, operative reports, pathology reports, radiology reports, and discharge summaries will be transcribed. Formatting and proofreading skills are emphasized in this course.

(Fall or Spring Semester) Prerequisites: MB 119 and CS 132.


MB 222 Medical Transcription II (3)

This advanced course in medical transcription provides the student with the opportunity to transcribe realistic medical reports dictated by physicians practicing in various medical specialties. Speed and accuracy as well as the building of a comprehensive medical vocabulary will be emphasized.

(Fall or Spring semester) Prerequisite: MB 221.


MB 261 Medical Office Computer Systems (3)

This course is designed to work with a computer-based system to manage health-care practices in a contemporary office. Simulations of typical office administrative activities including record management, appointments, patient billing, and insurance claims will be covered.

(Spring Semester) Prerequisite: MB 265.


MB 265 Insurance & Reimbursement Processing (3)

This course covers the principles and practice of health insurance billing and reimbursement. Students will learn what impact managed care and state and federal regulations have on health insurance billing. Guidelines for completing claims for inpatient, outpatient, emergency department, and physician office encounters using CMS-1450 and CMS-1500 forms will be covered. Students will also learn about the use of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) for submitting claims. Simulations, real world examples, and review exercises will give students the opportunity to apply learned material.

(Fall Semester) Prerequisite: HIT 101 and CS 132.
