ED 104 Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3)

This course discusses the social, intellectual, emotional, and physical development of the young child. The role of the Early Childhood professional is examined. Surveyed are the approaches to early childhood learning, instructional materials, and methods that are developmentally appropriate. Also discussed are the functions of various types of early childhood programs, discipline techniques and the importance of play. Off-campus field experience complements classroom instruction. (Fall Semester)

ED 105 Care of Infants and Toddlers (3)

This course will provide students with an overview of the role of the caregiver in enhancing the social, emotional, physical and cognitive development of infants and toddlers. Curriculum planning, environmental design, selection and use of materials and the evaluation of infant/toddler programs will also be discussed. Off-campus field experience complements classroom instruction. (Spring Semester) Prerequisite: ED 104 with a minimum grade of "C".

ED 110 Young Children and the Arts (3)

This course examines the nature of creativity and the expressive and aesthetic growth of children as well as the teacher's role in providing for the creative development of the young child in the areas of art, music, and movement. (Fall Semester)

ED 201 Foundations of Education (3)

This course provides an overview of the historical, philosophical, and sociological foundations of education. Educational statutes, legislation, and judicial decisions as they pertain to classroom teachers will be discussed. New York State mandated child abuse training is included. (Spring Semester)

ED 213 Curriculum and Methods for Young Children (3)

Theories in curriculum development, including language arts, social studies, science and mathematics will be studied in relation to present day educational principles of early childhood education. (Fall Semester) Prerequisite: ED 104 with a minimum grade of "C".


ED 214 Children with Special Needs (3)

The assessment, recording and reporting of children’s progress is discussed. This course introduces the student to the characteristics of young children with special needs. (Spring Semester) Prerequisite: ED 213 with a minimum grade of "C".

ED 217 Administration of Child Care Centers (3)

A study and discussion of the principles involved in developing a child care facility. Topic areas include, but are not limited to, needs assessment, regulatory agencies, staffing, marketing and establishing policy. (Fall Semester) Prerequisite: ED 104 with a minimum grade of "C".

ED 220 Field Experience I (3)

Students observe, record and assess children's developmental progress; plan, prepare, and present age appropriate activities; gain leadership and group management skills while assisting in an early childhood classroom. The student, classroom teacher, and faculty supervisor work together to develop an appropriate learning experience for the student. (Fall Semester) Prerequisite: ED 104 with a minimum grade of "C". Corequisite: ED 213.

ED 225 Field Experience II (3)

Students continue to develop and refine their classroom skills as they observe and work to enhance the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development of young children. Guidance is provided by the classroom teacher and faculty supervisor. (Spring semester) Prerequisite: ED 220 with a minimum grade of "C". Corequisite:  ED 214.
