Echocardiography is a specialized concentration within the field of ultrasound detailing heart structures. The Cardiac Sonographer is a skilled person qualified by academic and clinical preparation to perform echocardiography exams under the supervision of a qualified physician. The Echocardiographer may provide this service in a variety of medical settings. The demands of the Cardiac Sonographer require a working knowledge of detailed anatomy and physiology of the heart, as well as scanning techniques to obtain the optimum image.

Students must begin this one-year certificate program in the fall semester. The program of study includes thirty-six (36) credit hours of didactic, college laboratory, and clinical sessions. All courses must be taken sequentially and all students matriculate on a full-time basis. Areas of concentration include ultrasound physics and adult/pediatric echocardiography. Extensive clinical experience is provided at Western New York health care facilities. (Transportation is the responsibility of the student.)

The graduate is eligible to sit for the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography Certifying Examinations for Cardiovascular Principles and Instrumentation, Adult Echocardiography, and Pediatric Echocardiography.

Minimum Certificate Requirements:

  1. A total of 36 credit hours with a QPA of 2.0
  2. Specific Admission Requirements: Must be a graduate of an Allied Health program with an A.A.S. degree or higher. (Examples: Radiologic Technology, R.N., Surgical Technology, Respiratory Therapy.) The Allied Health program must include direct patient care. A minimum of a 3.0 semester average attained in the final semester of program coursework. College preparatory physics
  3. Program Requirements*: DMS 106, ECH 100, ECH 101, ECH 102, ECH 103, ECH 104, ECH 120, DMS 206, ECH 201, ECH 202, ECH 203, ECH 204, ECH 220, ECH 230

* A minimum grade of “C” is required in these courses.
