Mary Travers Murphy is December 2012 Commencement Speaker

BUFFALO, N.Y. -  Trocaire College President Bassam M. Deeb announced that Mary Travers Murphy, Executive Director of the Family Justice Center, will address the December graduating class of 2012 as this year’s commencement speaker.  The commencement will be held on December 15 at the University of Buffalo Center for the Arts.  Ms. Travers Murphy will address 188 graduates and their families and friends.

Mary Travers Murphy served as Orchard Park Town Supervisor from January 2006 until December 2009.  Prior to that time, Travers Murphy spent nineteen years as a television news reporter at WKBW-TV – the last seventeen of those years as the “Action 7” consumer news reporter.

As a highly-decorated journalist, Travers Murphy was a multiple winner of the New York State Broadcasters award for outstanding news coverage.  She was also the recipient of the 1989 Regional Investigative Reporting award from the Radio Television News Directors Association.  In 1997 the United States Attorney for Western New York presented her with a Certificate of Merit for her role in exposing telemarketing fraud in Western New York.

Travers Murphy currently serves as the Executive Director of the Family Justice Center, a local agency that assists victims of domestic violence.  With thirteen partners under one roof, the Family Justice Center offers all services that a person would need to leave an abusive relationship.

Trocaire College, founded in 1958 by the Sisters of Mercy of Buffalo, is a private college offering associate and baccalaureate degrees as well as certificate programs in hospitality, healthcare, hospitality and technology.  Trocaire’s main campus in Buffalo is the hub for healthcare majors while the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality & Business location on Transit Road in Lancaster offers courses in hospitality, dietetic technology, human resource management, computer networking and Trocaire’s newest program in Healthcare Informatics.
