BUFFALO, N.Y. -  Beginning with the Fall 2010 semester, Trocaire College plans to offer its first four-year degree.

The degree program is a Bachelor of Science in Radiologic Technology, approved by the New York State Education Department.  Since 1958, Trocaire has been offering associate’s degrees and certificates.

This new four-year degree program will build on the current AAS two-year program in Radiologic Technology.  The four-year program will consist of two years of required core curriculum, specific radiologic technology coursework and professional training leading to a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in radiologic technology and a specialty in computed tomography.  To provide flexibility for radiologic technologists to continue working while completing their baccalaureate degree, the program will be offered in an evening/weekend format.

This new four-year program adds an important level of education that is needed in the Western New York community and beyond.  “This will be the first Bachelor’s Degree with a major in Radiologic Technology and a specialty in Computed Tomography that will originate in an institution of higher education in Western New York,” noted Thomas Mitchell, Vice President for Academic Affairs.  “We are very excited about the opportunities this program will provide to all practitioners in the field.”

“This has been a work in progress for over two years.  It is wonderful to see it come to fruition,” said Dr. Paul B. Hurley, Jr., college president.  “We are pleased to offer our students, as well as other associate degree licensed radiologic technologists and those trained in hospital-based programs, the opportunity to earn their bachelor’s degree at Trocaire College.”

Students who enroll in the two-year radiologic technology degree, can now take advantage of the seamless “two plus two” program to continue for a bachelors degree.  This new level of degree is consistent with the college’s mission to encourage students towards personal enrichment, dignity and self worth, and a commitment to lifelong learning.  Recognizing the individual needs of its diverse student body, this new degree will enhance students’ opportunities for obtaining a baccalaureate degree and broaden their professional career status and concomitant wage premiums.  This innovative new program builds on the excellent reputation of a 37-year history of radiologic technologists who have graduated with an Associate Degree in Applied Science (A.A.S.).

The college’s mission is to improve the quality of people’s lives by providing the best value in health care education.  Through this program, the college wishes to be responsive to the clinical, organizational and fiscal demands facing the health care industry and thereby support the creation of advanced educational and skill development opportunities for Radiologic Technologists.
