Service Learning
Service learning seeks to integrate meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.
Students at Trocaire who choose to do service learning perform 16 hours of service at sites designated by Sister Margy Gorman, Director of Mission and Service.
Students receive information on the program in their classrooms and are then required to make arrangements with the manager at the site(s) they choose for service. They then complete a service learning contract and return it to the Director of Mission and Service.
Each time students perform service, they request the manager/supervisor to sign off on their hours on their service verification form which they return to the Director of Mission and Service at the end of the semester.
Students are encouraged to reflect on their experience, write a paper on their service experience, and share with class members.
Trocaire College is a member of the Western New York Service Learning Coalition (WNYSLC), a collaboration of colleges, universities and community organizations that work together to strengthen campus-community partnerships and promote student engagement in the community.
