Dear Friends of Trocaire,
Come join us as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of Trocaire College by the Sisters of Mercy in 1958!
Trocaire, originally called Sancta Maria College, was established to educate new members of the Sisters of Mercy to teach in various schools in Western New York.
In 1965, when the decision was made to close the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Sancta Maria opened its doors to lay women and expanded its offerings to include the nursing education that had been previously provided by the School of Nursing.
In 1966, the name of the college was changed to Trocaire, the Gaelic word for Mercy, and in 1972, the college opened its doors to male students.
Today Trocaire is still recognized for its variety of Health Science programs offered at our Choate Avenue site educating health care personnel for Buffalo and beyond.
As of January of this year we have opened a second site for Hospitality and Business programs at the Russell J. Salvatore School of Hospitality and Business located on Transit Road in Lancaster.
Our theme, 50 Years of Reaching Dreams, speaks to the more than 8400 alumni who have been assisted by the Trocaire family of faculty, staff, donors and friends in achieving their career goals and realizing their dreams.
Festivities will begin on June 24th in honor of the receipt of the official charter from the State Education Department in June 1958, and will end with a Trocaire Community Party in June 2009 – with lots of other celebrations in-between!
We look forward to seeing you at one or more of our festivities!
Sincerely,
Paul B. Hurley, Jr., Ph.D.
President
